Introduction To My Project - September Post

For my first project of the year I have chosen to explore the story of Dark Mermaids. I have chosen this theme as throughout my life, I have always been fascinated by these fictional aquatic creatures. At a young age my idea of mermaids was based upon the depiction of a mermaid being a singing girl of the sea who falls in love with a human man through Disneys Little Mermaid, as i grew up my perspective on this mystical creature evolved through numerous depictions of mermaids through many movies and stories including Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter. i was then aware that mermaids were not all innocent and during my research stages i began to find that a reoccurring theme in many folklores based on mermaids, of their association with death and uncertainty. through my project i wanted to explore these concepts in a variety of ways, using imagery of the female form with moody blue and midnight purple tones throughout my work to portray these aquatic spirits. i thought this would be a great theme to be able to explore many artistic techniques through despite the inability to get first hand photography of real life mermaids i will be able to use the human form and manipulate these using Photoshop or using imagery of fish and other aquatic creatures.
